    Disclaimer

This calculator provides estimates only based on generic information. Actual savings timeline may vary based on interest rate changes, fees, taxes on interest, and your personal circumstances. A 20% deposit is typically recommended to avoid Lender's Mortgage Insurance (LMI), though some lenders offer options with lower deposits.

    Quick answer

This tool projects how quickly you'll reach your deposit goal by combining your current savings, regular contributions and the compound interest your savings earn along the way.

    About this calculator

Most NZ banks want a 20% deposit on an existing home — though there are two important exceptions. The First Home Loan scheme (Kāinga Ora) lets eligible buyers purchase with just a 5% deposit, and many banks allocate a portion of their lending to low-deposit ('LVR exemption') applicants, especially for new builds.

The calculator works forwards from where you are today: it takes your starting balance, adds your weekly, fortnightly or monthly contributions, and applies your savings interest rate as monthly compounding. Each month your balance grows from both your contributions and the interest already earned, which is why higher rates and longer time horizons disproportionately accelerate progress.

Remember to budget for more than the deposit: legal fees ($1,500–$2,500), a builder's report ($600–$1,000), LIM ($300–$500) and moving costs. A KiwiSaver first-home withdrawal can supplement your cash savings — model that separately in our KiwiSaver First Home Calculator.

    Worked example

    Target: $800,000 home with a 20% deposit = $160,000. You have $50,000 saved and contribute $1,000/month into a 4.5% savings account.

With compounding, you'd hit the $160,000 goal in roughly 8 years and 2 months — about 4 months sooner than a non-interest-bearing account, with around $9,000 of that total coming from interest earned.
